Hasty Generalization

Hasty Generalization is an informal fallacy essentially making a rushed conclusion without considering all of the variables.

This example that I came across on twitter represents Hasty Generalization because whoever created this example was rushing when making this conclusion. This example informs that because that person dislikes someone, this dislike automatically turns the person into Adolf Hitler. When this person made this picture they applied a belief to a larger population than he/she should have based on the information that he/she has. The person who made this should not have applied his own belief towards a whole population and should have considered all the right variables to then make a reasonable conclusion.

Problems of the College Admissions Trilemma

I have chosen Ross Douthat as my columnist and I came across one of his articles that focuses on the college admissions trilemma. College admission trilemma is an argument that seems to increase with the justification of a newspaper that uses Harvard admissions data to estimate the importance of preferences for athletes, legacies, the children of donors and Harvard faculty. Although Douthat does not say it implicitly, the colleges and universities being targeted seem to fall into the category of status or elite institutions, as its main target is Harvard University private Ivy League research university. This article, like the definition, continues an unhelpful obsession with how the most elite private (preferably Ivy League’s) schools manage their admissions.

I disagree with what Douthat tries to convey due to the fact that the problem comes down to the fact that there are too many high school graduates who do not have the academic skills to thrive and be successful at these eminent institutions. Why should a naïve academically unqualified football player steal the spot of an intelligent motivated driven student who does not play a sport to a “prestigious” university? The university’s goal should be accepting the brightest students to pursue their education of choice. When we focus on a prestigious school such as Harvard, you can tell that their primary mission is not to educate, but to establish and maintain an artificially small elite and to keep a reputation that claims to focus on diversity, but with an such a large undergraduate population (of almost 6700 students) it remains as just an institution devoted to propagating diversity. This undergraduate side has the legacy preferences, preferences for rich kid sports, preferences for children of big donors and quotas for blacks and Asians.

Douthat does have a hidden point and that is that admission to elite schools should be based on merit. Because the diversity being implemented by the Ivies makes them seem racist. These Ivy League schools are taking away Asians students who have earned the right to be there by studying harder. Douthat cites and focuses mainly on Harvard which becomes understandable as Harvard is one of the most prestigious and known school all over the world.

This article focuses on the problem of college admissions trilemma, Douthat asking what is there to do? And the answer should be obvious that America being capable of overcoming many obstacles that we have been faced with can overcome this unfair justice and focus on giving admission to these fairly smart and deserving students the opportunity to challenge themselves and being accepted into universities such as Harvard University.

My Jamadoo

Title and Artist: Creep by Radiohead

Album: Pablo Honey

Lyrics:

When you were here before
Couldn’t look you in the eye
You’re just like an angel
Your skin makes me cry

When you were here before
Couldn’t look you in the eye
You’re just like an angel
Your skin makes me cry

You float like a feather
In a beautiful world
And I wish I was special
You’re so fuckin’ special

But I’m a creep, I’m a weirdo.
What the hell am I doing here?
I don’t belong here.

I don’t care if it hurts
I want to have control
I want a perfect body
I want a perfect soul

I want you to notice
When I’m not around
You’re so fuckin’ special
I wish I was special

But I’m a creep, I’m a weirdo.
What the hell am I doing here?
I don’t belong here.

She’s running

Description:
The reason why this song has become my current jamadoo is because I can relax a lot by just listening to the song.  I love the beat that this song contains and the calming vibe it contains. I had listened to this song way before but I started to really feeling the song emotionally after watching episode three of the italian show called Skam Italia. In the scene the main character, Edoardo Incanti, plays a song with his electric guitar to Eleonora Sava. This scene was beautifully portrayed and the song that Edoardo ended up playing for Eleonora was Creep by Radiohead, Edoardo sang this song beautiful and it was really hard not wanting to listen to Creep over and over again.

I believe this song holds many emotions within the lyrics and the background music from the very beginning makes the listener hard for them to not get sucked in into the feeling that Radiohead brings to the song. Creep by Radiohead deserves to reach anybody’s ears because the sentiment added to this song becomes very special and beautiful, and anybody that has listened to this song or has now become aware of it will agree that this song is very pleasing to the ear.

My Columnist

Ross Douthat is an American author and a New York Times columnist that have I selected to follow. I have concluded that I am a liberal-leaning person explaining my reasoning in choosing a conservative-leaning columnist in hopes to challenge and broaden my argumentative knowledge. Conservative New York Times author, Ross Douthat has written challengeable articles which will help me deepen my knowledge. I will be researching and following Ross Douthat and although he does not stand for what I mostly believe in I am sure I will be ready and thrilled to state my opinion and challenge his while at the same time trying to place myself in his shoes to see the world in a different perspective.
I choose this columnist because I feel that it will be challenging to argue with his well-thought-out opinions. Although some of his arguments sometimes rely on his personal experiences. While scrolling through some of his articles I came across a few that caught my eye and made me think more deeply about the topic being discussed. Douthat affirmed that “this anxiety is one spoke in the cycle driving American fertility downward” which I disagree on for one simple reason; Douthat does not use facts, numbers, or estimates to support this statement. Ross Douthat not only makes me deepen my thoughts but helps me open my eyes towards topics that I have been unfamiliar with. I choose this columnist because I feel that it will be challenging to argue with his well-thought-out opinions.
